The aunt things the only right thing to do is have the school teacher teach him. She says that since he doesn't know anything he is like this. She thinks that by teaching him he will change. Not knowing anything doesn't make him a man. And she wants him to die a man. He would try to make an effort to learn because the aunt has sacrificed all she has for him. She wants the people to tell him that this would be the best thing to do. If he is willing to be taught then this would be a way of paying her back for all that he has done.

He was given life in prison. People don't believe that he wasn't the one to kill the store owner and the other two. Since, he is colored they decided to put him in jail right away. His family knows that he would never do anything like this. His family knows that he is innocent. They can try to prove the court wrong but they won't.

Even though the one who witnessed it didn't kill anyone he still did something wrong. Since, the store owner was killed he thought it would be best to steal the money. He really needed the money he was really poor. But, by him taking the money made it seem like he was the one going to rob the store and killed the store owner and just killed these two other people because they were there witnessing everything.

There is a school teacher who used to teach the people who worked on the plantation. The mother of the one sentenced to jail knows him so she thinks it would be best for him to teach him while he is in jail. He doesn't want to teach him. He thinks there is no point in teaching him because he is in jail. There is no why that he could possibly get him out of jail. He would rather spend his time doing other things then visiting him in jail.

Well I decided to read this book because a friend of mind told me they read it at his school and recommended it to me. As I read the back I found it really interesting. Then I started reading the first couple of pages and caught my attention right away. A guy witnessed a shot out at a liquor store and yet since he was the only survivor was sentenced to death. The author described the scenery at the liquor store very well as if I were there.
